learn about metadata in Word

An MS Word document contains a considerable amount of hidden data. The problem that this 'hidden data can cause is now widely understood following several high profile cases where Word documents have been sent from Governmental bodies with hidden data. This has caused political embarrassment to governments in Europe and the USA and commercial distress to many companies.

The Microsoft support website includes several articles on minimizing and removing metadata. The article entitled "How to minimize metadata in Word 2003" (open the article) gives a good overview of the extent of the problem . The article states "Metadata is created in a variety of ways in Word documents. As a result, there is no single method to remove all such content from your documents."

There are manual options within Word for removing metadata and several companies offer tools for metadata removal.

PleaseErase detects and optionally removes tracked changes, Word comments, hidden text, standard and custom attributes. To learn about the advantages PleaseErase offers click here.
